Penney, Lewis shine for Whales at East Coast Championship, July, 2002

Jason Penney and Daniel Lewis of the Western Whales Swim Club reached unexpected high heights at the East Coast Championships in Halifax, N.S. this past summer.

Penney was named overall top achiever in the 11-12 year-old-boys' division after piling up a possible 280 of 300 points during his swims at the DalPlex.  Penney captured five gold medals and a silver throughout the weekend, taking gold medals in the 50-metre, 100-metre, 100-m and 400-m freestyle events, the 100-m and 200-m backstroke races along with a silver in the 200-m freestyle.  He just missed an 18-year-old record set by one of the best Newfoundland swimmers, Iain Tennent, by 17 one-hundredths of a second.

Lewis captured third place overall in the 11-12 year-old boys' category after earning 175 of a possible 300 points in the three-day event.  Lewis captured two gold, a silver and a bronze throughout the competition winning gold medals in the 100-m breastroke and 200-m Individual Medely (IM), silver in the 200-m breaststroke and a bronze in the 400-m IM.

The Two swimmers stood out in a meet of the best AAA swimmers across the Atlantic provinces, making them two of the best swimmers Atlantic Canada has to offer.  Furthermore, Penney and Lewis were named to the Speedo Atlantic Junior All-Star Team, a 12 swimmer team of the best swimmers in Atlantic Canada.

The Annual Janeway Wish Foundation Telethon
