About Us

OUR MISSION STATEMENT AND OUR BEGINNING.

Our Mission Statement:
To provide children with the opportunity to swim in all levels of swimming, novice, competitive and non-competitive;  to develop and maintain swimming skills;  to attain the level of performance desired by and within the physical potential of each athlete and to instill leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance and self-assurance within our athletes.

Our History:
The Swim Club began in 1968 as a summer club.  Druing the 1969-70 season the team became a full winter team and moved into the Arts and Culture Centre Pool.  They were then known as the Arts and Culture Swim Team and went on in 1970 to win the Provincial Championship.  The numbers quickly grew and in 1972 the swim club sent several members to the Canada Summer Games.
When Memorial University of Newfoundland opened a campus with a pool in Corner Brook, the swim team was invited to swim in the new facility.  With the move in 1974 came the name change Western Whales Swim Club, reflecting the new pool logo as well as the Western area of the Province.  Parents became involved immediately taking part in training as officials for the upcoming 1977 Canada Summer Games hosted in St. John's.
This excitement brought a whole new  feel to the club resulting in tremendous increase in swimmers at the local level for the following season.  In the mid 1980's and early 1990's the swim club expanded to include a Master's Program and Baby Whales Program (Our current "Novice Program" introducing new swimmers to the sport of competitive/non-competitive swimming.)  With the increasing numbers and two pools at our disposal the WWSC hired it first full-time Head Coach in 1985.
Throughout the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and now 2000's, the Western Whales Swim Club has continued its novice, competitive and non-competitive program emphasizing the development of swimming skills, proper technique, instilling leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance and self-assurance within our athletes keeping an environment that is condusive to the needs of the individual swimmers, whether it be at a competitive or non-competitive level.

Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth's beauty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.
